Gilchrist is a Birmingham landmark that prides itself on being an Old-fashioned soda fountain featuring sandwiches, salad plates, and milkshakes. Limeades are their specialty! Voted one of Alabama's 100 best places to eat before you die. Everything is made to order. Servicing the Mountain Brook area for over 80 years.

Sandwiches include BLT, pimento cheese, chicken salad, cream cheese and olive, grilled cheese, and peanut butter and jelly, as well as the famous hot beef, which comes with crumbled ground beef piled onto a toasted bun. Ice-cream treats include milkshakes, malts, sodas and floats.

Marvin “Doc” Gilchrist opened Mountain Brook Apothecary in December 1928, but not long after, the pharmacy became known by the name it still goes by today. Like many drug stores from that era, Gilchrist also had a soda fountain, and although the pharmacy moved out in the mid-1980s, the fountain and lunch counter have remained. In 80-plus years, Gilchrist has had only four owners, the latest of whom is Leon Rosato, who bought the place about 10 years ago. It remains the oldest continuing business in Mountain Brook Village.
